Exceptional Red Electrical Discharge Captured in the Atmosphere

A team of image specialists in New Zealand have managed to photograph images of crimson flashes, one of the least common atmospheric displays globally, during which glowing scarlet illuminations manifest in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists had originally set out to shoot the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the lower part of the country on a night in October, before encountering the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be lucky to get good weather that evening, but their night transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.

“He was checking his photographs for a stellar landscape and discovered he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he noted. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, generated by electrical storms. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the ground, red sprites propel upward towards the mesospheric region, forming appearances that look like pillars, carrots or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a red sprite was recorded – by chance – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Ethereal Sightings

They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but one photographer was fortunate. “I happened to be looking right at a sprite when it took place – an ideal happenstance looking at the appropriate section of the sky and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.

Observing the phenomena was a dream for the artist, an honored nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you are observing an unreal vision, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to witness.”

Technical and Innovative Mastery

Recording a red sprite demands a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and artistic vision, he said. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

Another photographer said it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his career. “I witnessed the Milky Way shining above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light moved above a electrical event at a great distance,” he described.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no further recordings depicting red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.

“This was a singular occasion when you know you are observing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
