Hellenic Police Boost Protection After Protests Against Israel Passenger Liner

Greek officials have substantially boosted security measures at two key harbors in an initiative to keep demonstrators from reaching a cruise liner carrying visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Recent Protests Prompt Increased Protection

The security reinforcement at the Peloponnesian ports followed previous protests when the cruise vessel docked at Kalamata earlier this week. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after community members organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"Despite the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its military operations in Gaza," stated an educator who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, non-combatant people are being slain."

Passenger Experience and Public Opinion

From higher vantage points, tourists watched as protesters in Kalamata yelled: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who spent the summer organizing peace demonstrations throughout Greece, asserted: "Israeli visitors who support the actions of their government aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Context and Diplomatic Ties

Constantine Filis explained: "Due to geographic proximity and our longstanding relationships with the Arab world, the average Greek is more sensitive to what is happening in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a difficult position," he elaborated. "Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for the majority of European countries."

Economic and Tourism Implications

Official data reveal that in excess of 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of greater tourism this year. This substantial influx underscores the significantly enhanced ties between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Partnership and Geographic Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also grants the added benefit of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"Greece is not going to endanger its connections with Israel," stated Filis. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more embracing, more equitable, more committed to demonstrate the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The magnitude of the Greek demonstration campaign has surprised Israeli authorities. Recently, the nation's diplomatic department warned travelers to remain inconspicuous, while domestic press characterized Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings emerging on edifices in the city center.

The head official of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece expressed concern: "Naturally we're worried. The sort of rhetoric we're experiencing can quickly turn into prejudiced."

Upcoming Events and Requests

Gradually, opponents have aimed at Athens' close ties with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the termination of the Souda Bay military facility, a NATO establishment that since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza has functioned as a crucial replenishment point for US military ships, combat aircraft and boats headed to Israel.

"There have been victories," declared Petros Constantinou. "Our main demand, now, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
